We have recently organised two very successful training sessions for OFSTED inspectors on inspecting CAD CAM in secondary schools. The sessions were planned and led by Bob Cater, Adviser for D&T with ESIS, The Education Support and Inspection Service for Bridgend, Caerphilly, Merthyr and RCT LEAs.
The day’s training focussed on the development of computer-aided design and manufacture in our secondary schools. The presentation was set in the context of what inspectors/advisers should expect to find and how to make judgements about standards in CAD/CAM. The day’s training was originally prepared to train inspectors in Wales in this area of D&T, and was modified following discussions with Mike Ive. The day covered:
- Defining the areas of CAD/CAM that pupils should engage with in schools;
- Showing the range of activities that might occur in CAD and CAM;
- Indicators for judging standards;
- Resources for CAD/CAM.
A range of exemplar work was used to form the basis for what sometimes became a lively discussion between members. On the first Day, Bob was observed by HMI Paul Hancock and we were delighted that the course was judged to meet the standard required for Bob to become an accredited trainer and for the course to be recognised by OFSTED and count towards an inspector’s training.
The day also allowed inspectors to swap ideas and stories about school inspection processes and raised issues for further training events. Our thanks to Bob and all those who supported the training days including NAAIDT members and students.
