The DfES green paper 'Schools Building on Success' sets out the vision for transforming education over the next four years. The proposals for a national curriculum for Key stages 1 to 3 and greater diversity in the 14 - 19 curriculum may well herald the end of design and technology as a statutory subject in all key stages. The extension of the specialist schools programme and the inclusion of a new designation, to include 'Engineering', is just one example that of many that is given to describe the kind of transformation that the Government are seeking. It maybe that what is needed is further thinking about the nature of 'specialist' schools – why not have 'Imagineering Academies' or 'Innovation Centres' or the really ambitious and not for the humble, shy or retiring types, the 'Trailblazer Excellence Centres'. Or maybe …. a specialist 'Design & Technology College'.
