Lesson Context
Suggestions for a variety of projects based on material that the students have decorated in a batik form (or with tie and dye).
1. Cushion

3. Long holder for plasic bags in the kitchen

Project Brief
Using material designed by the students, to design and make one of the following
1. A Cushion for a mother's day present
2. A plastic bag holder for their kitchen
3. A padded photo frame for an xmas present

Design and Manufacture
1. Simple Rectangle folded in half, holes punched around the edge about every 4cm, two sides secured by threading ribbon through hole, padded with wadding, final side threaded and tied.
2. Long rectangle glued to make a tube (45cm by 10cm diameter). Handle of similar material glued on the top. Holes punched around the bottom and threaded with elastic to keep plastic bags in but allow them to be pulled out.
3. Piece of card board (30x30cm) but could be any size, wadding stuck to the outside leaving a photosized dip in the middle then glue the material to the wadding and around the back. A stand can be added if necessary.(see photo)

Expected Outcomes
MLD –have gained an understanding of wax resist techniques, have chosen a design and with help have safely used equipment and made an individual project

SLD – have looked at different ways of making a batik , with help and guidance, using given materials have made a batik patterned article

PMLD - have watched and with physical adult help made a batik, with physical help have made a batik article

Differentiation
Differentiation by outcome, but also most of the work was on a one to one basis, so individuals were given varying degrees of adult help.

Classroom Organisation
2 hourly sessions over a period of 4 weeks

Could be easily be adapted for KS1 and KS2 textile projects
