Lesson Context
Following a visit to a "Sooty and Sweep" museum, Reception children decided to make their own versions and to put on a show using their classroom puppet theatre.
Resources Needed
Card tubes
Strips of wood
Card
Paper bags
Textiles chosen to simulate either gold or grey fur.
Coloured felt
graphics media
Teacher Preparation
Children return from visit and make a drawing of either Sooty or Sweep.
Drawings photocopied - one used to stick textiles on to form main body of puppet and one to which children applied annotations describing their materials choices (either by copying labels, attempting to do so with emergent writing or having teacher help to write labels they can read or recognise)
All available materials carefully selected to ensure Reception children are able to cut and join them and all attractively displayed with labels - as a "pick 'n mix" counter.
Project Brief
To design and make a puppet of either Sooty or Sweep and use them to perform a short scene in the classrom puppet theatre
Design and Manufacture
Main body cut out from collage created using photocopy of their original sketch as a basis.
Children offered choice of either a glove puppet (using paper bag); a stick puppet (using wood strip or card tube); or a string puppet.
Expected Outcomes
Each pupil produces own puppet of either Sooty or Sweep complete with an annotated drawing mounted in a design folder.
Classroom Organisation
Careful selection and organisation of resources to be used is key to the successful completion of high quality outcomes

The teacher's quality of planning, including the creative use of the photocopier, made the project achieveable
