Lesson Context
Whole class design and make task suitable for Y10 of a GCSE DT: Resistant Materials course or as an introductory project to AS Product Design
Resources Needed
Graphics media including squared paper
Card, thin string or twine, art straws, cocktail sticks or thin dowel
Low volt lamps and batteries
Sheet acrylic
Acrylic rods and tubes
ProDeskTop
CNC miller or router
Teacher Preparation
Organise a visit to see large engineering structures such as towers, bridges, cranes, stadiums and office blocks where the structural elements are clearly exposed.
Gather together slides and photographs of suitable structures and buildings to provide visual stimulus during designing and modelling
Project Brief
Design and make a desk or bedside lamp based on visual and structure elements recorded from a study of 'real' engineering structures
Design and Manufacture
Make sketches of large engineering structures such as towers, bridges, cranes, stadiums and office blocks where the structural elements are clearly exposed.
Select a suitable Low Volt lamp, battery and switch
Focus on a structural detail and use this as the basis for a lamp design.
Model some ideas using card, drinking straws, string and and cocktail sticks.
Sketch final designs on squared paper.
Use ProDeskTop to produce final drawings and output to CNC miller
