Lesson Context
This KS2 example is based on the QCA Unit 5A scheme of work for D&T. The project was carried out during weekly lessons with 56 Y5 children.

Resources Needed
A collection of musical instruments.
Margarine pots, plastic bottles, tins etc.
Paper, card, string, glue etc
Strip wood, dowel rod
Range of tools for cutting and shaping, paints and brushes
Papier mâché

Teacher Preparation
See QCA planning for D&T prior learning. Children had also completed science unit on sound including pitch and loudness.

Project Brief
To design and make a musical instrument to play notes of differing pitch

Design and Manufacture
See QCA Unit 5A and DATA Primary Guidance (1995) - Musical Instruments.
Children needed to spend time looking at ‘real’ musical instruments – seeing how they work, how they were constructed and materials used.
FPTs allowed children to make sounds using everyday items – shakers, drums, string instruments, scrapers etc.Papier mâché and use of tools for cutting and shaping wood were very popular choices.

Expected Outcomes
Each child to make an instrument capable of playing at least two notes of different pitch

Image
A small selection of completed musical instruments

Differentiation
Extension activities: perform a piece of music – some in groups. Less able received support from learning assistant

Classroom Organisation
Storage between lessons is an important issue. Sessions only lasted an hour with a whole class due to timetable restrictions but blocking time would be more effective. Classroom assistant was a very valuable resource for the teacher.

Additional Information
This project was very enjoyable. Children were motivated, enthusiastic and proud of their finished instrument.
