Lesson Context
This work was based on Unit3A Packaging from the QCA scheme of work. It was carried out by two Yr 3/4 classes. It also provided the basis for Literacy work on writing instructions providing great motivation for this.

Squared paper
Coloured card
PVA glue
Glue sticks
Pencils, scissors, rulers etc for marking out and cutting
Safety cutting board
Stanley knife for adult use only
Computer and printer
Teacher Preparation

Project Brief
To design and make a box for an Easter egg. The egg must be visible through a cut-out.
Design and Manufacture
See QCA Unit 3A.
The children found that the paper prototype was invaluable
in helping decide the size and position of the cut-outs making it much easier for them to change their design.
This work was then used in Literacy to provide a real purpose for writing instructions.
The making of a real Easter egg finished the project and provided a reason for all their efforts. I think this was probably the best motivation of all!!
Expected Outcomes
To produce a variety of boxes of different sizes and colours.
Classroom Organisation
This was a whole class activity. The children worked in pairs to produce one box. It took place over a half term.
Additional Information
This was a very enjoyable project and highly motivating.
