Embedding ICT in DT

Lesson Context
Part of a two year rolling programme of art and DT activities based on QCA schemes of work.

Resources Needed
Syringes, plastic tubing, Junk boxes, PVA glue, ballons, sellotape, masking tape and paint.

Teacher Preparation
Collect resources, construct simple mechanisms for teaching.

Project Brief
The children were asked to design and make a moving monster.

Design and Manufacture
The children were shown examples of mechanisms moved by pneumatics. Groups made a simple pneumatic system using syringes and plastic tubing.
The children spent some time designing a moving monster and tried out their pneumatic system on a simple mechanism that they would use for their model.
Appropriate skills were taught when needed eg how to use a glue gun.
Evaluation
The task was challeging for some children, therefore some children did not complete their model. Other children changed their design because of their investigations with pneumatic system and moving parts.
All children enjoyed the project and gained many new skills.

Expected Outcomes
The children were expected to design and make a moving monster with at least one moving part. The moving part was to be moved by a simple pneumatic system.

Differentiation
Differentiation was achieved by outcome. Extra classroom support was supplied for a small group of children. A specific design brief was given to this group.

Classroom Organisation
The children were arranged in three ability groups. there were no significant changes in furniture positions. An area was set aside for the use of the glue gun.

Additional Information
Belgrave CE Primary School is a new school and this was the first DT project these children took part in.
