Lesson Context
This KS2 example was based upon a short half term homework project with 28 year 6 pupils. See attached resource sheet.
Resources Needed
Basic resources were available to use from school but most children resourced their projects themselves.
Teacher Preparation
All children had completed several units of D&T work throughout the year and most were now able to understand the whole cycle of D&T, particularly relating to D&T in the real world.
The homework project need to be explained thoroughly during class time, determining a time limit. I find the longer that you give them the less enthusiastic they are about completeing the project.
I was surprised that all children were enthusiastic about the project and proudly talked through their products to the rest of the class.
Project Brief
See attached resource sheet.
Research, design and make a good quality, purposeful product.
Design and Manufacture
See attached resource sheet.
Open ended depending on their own area of interest.
Expected Outcomes
Each child to produce research notes, design ideas and an end product.
The variety of products completed was wonderful.
Differentiation
Open ended project
Additional Information
Children need to understand the process of D&T and be enthusiastic about the subject if good quality products are to be made.
Every child made a product and gave a brief talk to the class about the process that they went through. Other children then asked them questions about their project.
It was an interesting homework, which produced a wide variety of products. The products indicated the children’s interests outside school.
