New opportunities in ICT

Emphasising ICT capability

The ICT curriculum at key stage 3 seeks to develop ICT capability, which encompasses not only the mastery of technical skills and techniques but also the understanding to apply these skills purposefully in learning, everyday life and employment. A learner demonstrating ICT capability is able to make informed decisions about when and how to use these skills to support their learning.

ICT capability promotes initiative and independent learning and supports creativity. Technology can be used to support logical reasoning and problem solving, analysis and research, creativity and design across the curriculum. The development of generic ICT capability is an indispensable component of the curriculum because it supports other learning and helps individuals to respond to change.

The focus on developing ICT capability and using appropriate enquiry techniques can enhance pupils' capabilities and help develop their PLTS through problem-solving and decision-making activities.

Promoting learner-centred approaches

The new programme of study for ICT supports personalisation of the curriculum, providing a learner-centred environment where pupils can experiment and take risks when developing new understanding. It supports personalised and independent learning while also encouraging wider communication and collaborative learning.
