Fellow NAAIDT members and others may like to know of WELturn and WELmill.

WELturn is an upgrade for the Emco Compact 5PC lathe and 5CNC lathe (all
Marks). It gives them a completely new control system. WELturn comprises
electronic hardware and PC software. The machines are fully controlled
from a PC and the limitations of the original controllers are completely
overcome. The lathes are transformed into useful and versatile machine
tools.

WELmill is for the Emco F1 mill and its WoodWorker variant. It too
gives these machines a completely new control system and also comprises
electronic hardware and PC software. The machines are fully controlled
from a PC, the limitations of their original controllers are overcome and
they are given full 3-axis capability.

NC code for the lathes and mills can be created by AlphaCAM or any other
software with configurable post-processor capability such as Galaad and
MiniCAM. WELturn and WELmill post processors are available for AlphaCAM,
Galaad and MiniCAM. It is expected that there will be a post processor for
EdgeCAM towards the end of 2002.

ProDesktop and other 3D modelling software: files saved in STL format can
be imported into MiniCAM for tool path setting and code creation. As there
is a WELmill post processor for MiniCAM, designs created in software such
as ProDesktop can be machined by an upgraded Emco F1 mill or WoodWorker.

Further information about WELturn and WELmill is available at
www.welsoft.co.uk where there are a downloadable demonstration versions of
WELturn and WELmill and much other information.

For anyone who wishes to continue to use the Emco 5CNC lathe (not the 5PC
lathe) or F1 mill and WoodWorker with their native control system, a
utility called WELedit enables NC code to be prepared manually on a PC and
then downloaded to these machines.
