Lesson Context
This unit was based on the QCA unit 4B – Storybooks.
Resources Needed
Lots of card!
Card drills and click rivets are a good alternative to split pins.
A rectangle made of Meccano provides a very good way of demonstrating how a pop-up mechanism folds when the card closes.
Access to a computer to use graphics packages for the DMA illustrations.
Teacher Preparation
Cutting strips of card and making a range of teacher aides to illustrate mechanisms to the pupils made life much easier.
Although the chidlren investiagted and evaluated a range of existing products, they needed to have examples that they could dissassemble and teacher-made products made this affordable and effective.
Project Brief
Design and make a page for a counting book that will be used by the reception class. The page must contain a pop-up and a linkage and lever mechanism.
Expected Outcomes
Investigate and evaluate a range of books that contain movement through linkage and lever mechanisms and pop-up mechanisms.
Produce a range of linkage and lever mechanisms and pop-up mechanisms during the FPT and evalaute their effectiveness.
Use these skills to complete the design brief.
