NAAIDT's response to QCA 11-19 Skills Framework and Next Steps in the Key Stage 3 Review
Submitted by: Jonathan Gershon

Dear NAAIDT colleagues

Thanks for your replies and support on the KS3 review so far. The first stage has now been completed in NAAIDT's response to the QCA 11-19 Skills Framework Proposals. Please find attached a copy of our response.
The next step will be to respond to the KS3 Design and Technology review, remembering that the published intention of the KS3 Review is to
* Allow catch up and stretch in the core subjects
* Reduce overlap and repetition
* To be more flexible to respond to schools contexts and needs so allowing choice eg the reduced 2 year KS3 curriculum
* Ensure smooth transition to Key Stage 4 (and from Key Stage 2)

The Executive would like to get a sense of what you believe should be the future basis of the KS3 D&T curriculum....
1. What should be the core experience for all pupils?
2. What knowledge, skills and understanding should all pupils leave KS3 with - even if it is a reduced 2 year KS3?
3. How should we exemplify all the skills development abundant in good Design and Technology? (Core or Functional skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT; Thinking Skills; Manipulative & Motor; Teamworking and social skills; etc)
4. What are the key areas / buzzwords we should include as aspects that D&T does or can contribute towards eg Sustainability, Entrepreneurship ???

Barry Lewis (President) and I are putting together a draft statement around D&T in KS3 and would really like your thoughts on this now.
DEADLINE - We must respond to QCA before the end of the month so please add any comments you may wish to make in the NAAIDT Members area by Friday 25th November. You will find this topic in the '02 National Currulum' Forum.
We will try to complete the NAAIDT view during the weekend.....
Many Thanks
Jonathan Gershon (e-mail: jonathan.gershon@harrow.gov.uk )
