Planning across the key stage in art and design

Where are the opportunities to develop pupils' experience of the key concepts?

There are a number of key concepts that underpin the study of art, craft and design. Pupils need opportunities to explore and learn about these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding. Your planning should support the integration of the key concepts into learning and teaching across the key stage. For example, your pupils will need increased opportunities to explore and develop their creative skills and explore working in innovative ways. The concepts will be introduced where appropriate and not all of the key concepts will be addressed in each individual task. However, you should plan to ensure that pupils have a range of opportunities throughout the key stage to address each of the areas.

How can planning ensure that pupils make progress in the key processes?

The key processes described in the programme of study are the essential and interrelated skills and processes in art and design that pupils need to learn to make progress. You will need to ensure your planning provides for increased demand and expectation to ensure that pupils make progress in these areas. For example they will need opportunities to work with increased independence, to become more self directed and self reliant when developing ideas and intentions when refining their images and artifacts. The interrelated nature of these processes will ensure that learners will revisit these key processes at various stages throughout the key stage.

Curriculum opportunities

Pupils should be given planned opportunities to experience the range and content described in the programme of study. When planning, pupils need to be encouraged to engage with contemporary ideas and issues which are relevant to their local and wider communities. They need to be encouraged to make meaningful use of visits to galleries and museums and where possible pupils need increased opportunities to develop a knowledge of the creative and cultural industries and their associated practices. They should be provided with opportunities to integrate ICT into all creative processes as appropriate, and to use ICT to support their own and others learning. They also need planned opportunities to develop collaborative and social practices in the way they work together both in and out of school. Through such work they will develop their individual maturity and sense of self and belonging.
