The Design Council works to raise the profile of design across the education spectrum, aiming both to help pupils make the most of their creativity and to nurture the designers of the future.
Our Kit for Purpose initiative is researching how well designed furniture and resources can lead to better teaching and learning experiences and, ultimately, better results in schools. The project is focusing both on the design of products themselves and the processes schools use to buy them. The Furniture for the Future competition challenged designers and furniture manufacturers to produce furniture allowing a greater variety of teaching and learning styles. The resulting prototypes are intended to encourage schools to opt for better designed furniture that helps them meet learning objectives rather than simply replace damaged items.
In addition, we are helping secondary schools bring the real world of design into the classroom with Designers into Schools Week, which lets Design & Technology pupils work with professional designers.
The initiative gives pupils a unique opportunity to build their creativity and problem solving skills, as well as helping them link Design & Technology as a curriculum subject with design as a creative force shaping everyday experiences.
We are also giving undergraduates insight into the creative industries by providing opportunities to network with designers. The Design Council is also raising business and management students’ awareness of how design, innovation and creativity contribute to competitiveness.
